Portland to Ecuador Cruise

Well the day has finally come when you can either question our sanity or envy our adventurous spirit. We have decided to travel to Ecuador by boat. You would assume that we have been sailing on a boat for years and we are just ready to stretch our wings to ocean voyage. That is not the case. Tom has always had the sailing bug. But we are older now and the idea of having to manage sails today is out of the question for us. We did, however, decide to buy a Trawler which is much more stable and and we can run it on our own.

The Mark Twain is a 44 ft Trawler that was built in 1982 by C&L boat works and is powered by two 129HP Volvo Penta Diesels. It has modern electronics and navigation. We have gone through it from top to bottom. Nothing has been left un-inspected, repaired or replaced as necessary. It is a sturdy vessel and we are ready to go. Its top speed is only 8 knots. So we really can’t be in a hurry.

  1. I just learned to sail and now have a greater appreciation for what you are doing. What an adventure! Thanks for blogging. I look forward to hearing how it goes!
